The old shortcut sounds reasonable: high launch and high spin need low-launch and low-spin. Low launch and low spin need high-launch and higher-spin. Big slice needs softer. Hook needs stiffer.


Sometimes that works. Many times it misses the cause.


A player with high spin might be striking the ball low on the face. With a driver, low-face strikes usually add spin. Changing to a lower-spin shaft may not solve that. A head change, tee height change, loft adjustment, or length adjustment may do more.


A player fighting a slice might not need a softer shaft. The shaft may already be rotating too slowly for that player’s release. A different profile, weight, or head setting may help the face return square more often.


A player missing left may not need the stiffest shaft in the rack. If the shaft feels too hard to load, the player may throw the hands at the ball to create speed. That can make the left miss worse.
